Better days

Hi Everyone

For a long time, I have wanted to tell you why I make cards for www.operationwritehome.dk

Do you want to know?  ... here goes:

My father, Orla Bak, was stationed under the UN flag, in Gaza in the late 1950'
After he had served, he signed a "stand-by" contract for abt. 10 years, as far as I remember, but it could have been longer.

My sister and I knew where the small red book were! We dreaded that small book. We knew that if he took it and packed a bag, he would have to go away.

As young children we did not understand - go where? Why? Mother was sad, when they talked on the radio, about someting we did not understand, but we knew the connection between her sadness, and dad looking in the cabinet where the red book layed.

As teenagers we learned that if he had taken the red book, he had had 24 hours to report to a military facillity in Aalborg.

The fear from back then - I can still recall it.

I think small children are forgotten, even to day. We don't talk about how they feel and about their fear.

When I make a card for children. I often place a pixie book on the back.

Why?? It is great to get a letter/card from mom, dad, uncle, grandmom or granddad - but how often will it be read to the child recieving it? Instead, it's possible to say: Let's read the book she/he sendt home to you. My hope is, that it will bring a closeness between the child and the soldier, that are often so far away.

Thank you Charlie Johannsen for making it possible for me and many many others to give this small contribution. I hope we can do so - as long as cards are needed.

Well, enough said... here's some more cards...
